Cannabis oil for wasp and bee stings

Cannabis Oil & Wasp Stings
At CANNADOLTM, we continuously explore scientific publications related to cannabis that help us understand its various applications. Our goal and mission are to stay up-to-date with information about how cannabis compounds work so we can offer you the best products and the most helpful advice.
If you’ve already read about cannabis oil, you know it has a broad therapeutic spectrum, meaning it can aid in managing various health issues since the active substances it contains—cannabinoids like CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN, THC...—influence receptors (CB1 and CB2 receptors) found virtually throughout our bodies. Numerous research findings support that cannabis oil may have anti-anxiety, pain-relieving, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects and can help those suffering from cancer, epilepsy, and insomnia. However, we hadn’t considered one particular use until life presented us with a specific case.
An Actual Case
Adri, a friend and cannabis oil user of ours, called one day unusually excited:
"You won’t believe what happened!"
Adri’s young son, Bence, was stung by a wasp during a family fishing trip. The wasp landed on his back, and when Bence tried to brush it off, he accidentally grabbed it, resulting in two stings on his thumb. Although similar incidents had occurred before, this sting had unusual and frightening consequences. Red, hive-like spots appeared on Bence’s eyelid, behind his ear, on his neck, and under both armpits, and his eyelid became badly swollen.
Shortly after the sting, Bence started scratching his throat and began coughing heavily. His neck and chest were itchy. Afraid the situation might worsen, Adri called the family doctor and emergency services, but neither had the adrenaline injections typically used in such cases. So, Adri called an ambulance. After making the call, she remembered the full-spectrum CBD Oil in her bag and, in her panic, gave Bence a quarter pipette of it. From that moment, the story took a pleasantly surprising turn—by the time the paramedics arrived—roughly 30 minutes later—all the red spots had disappeared from Bence’s body, and only the sting wounds remained visible. There were many apologies and explanations. The paramedics were understanding, knowing that stings like these can have severe consequences, but they shook their heads in disbelief when they learned what Bence had been given.
Later, Adri even took the cannabis oil to her son’s soccer practices in case it was needed again. She shared Bence’s story with other parents, which spread, and multiple times parents ran up to her at practices with their children who had been stung by wasps or bees, knowing she had the oil. These stings caused less severe allergic reactions than what Adri’s family experienced—mostly swelling that they treated externally with the oil, which was still very effective. The stung areas didn’t swell at all if treated with oil within minutes, and only the minor puncture marks could be seen.
Through Adri’s story, we saw that cannabis oil used both topically and internally effectively alleviates symptoms caused by wasp or bee stings, opening up a potential application we hadn’t previously considered. We decided to look deeper into how cannabis oil actually works on wasp stings.

What Happens When a Bee or Wasp Stings?
When a wasp or bee stings, the insect injects venom into the body with its stinger. Although the venom compositions of bees and wasps differ, the mechanism of their effects on the body is similar. The venom triggers an immediate immune response. For most people, the initial reaction is redness and swelling, followed by itching and pain. For those sensitive or allergic to insect venom, symptoms can be much more severe, potentially leading to anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening condition characterized by a sudden drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and severe circulatory problems that can be fatal without medical intervention.
Cannabis oil, especially its CBD (cannabidiol) component, has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, making it potentially effective at relieving symptoms caused by wasp and bee stings. Since the toxins released during stings cause inflammation, pain, and swelling, examining CBD’s effects in this context is particularly relevant.
How Does Cannabis Oil Affect Sting Symptoms?
-
Anti-inflammatory effect: Venoms from bees and wasps trigger inflammatory responses in the body, largely due to components like histamine, melittin, and phospholipases. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce the inflammation and swelling at the sting site.
- A 2015 study published in the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology found that CBD effectively reduces inflammation by modulating the endocannabinoid system and influencing the production of inflammation-inducing mediators such as TNF-alpha and cytokines. Therefore, cannabis oil may aid in managing the inflammation caused by bee and wasp stings.
-
Pain relief: Compounds like acetylcholine, melittin, and kinin released during stings are responsible for the pain sensation. Numerous studies support CBD’s pain-relieving effects, particularly for neuropathic and chronic pain.
- A 2018 study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology concluded that CBD directly reduces pain perception by acting on TRPV1 receptors (pain receptors) and other inflammatory mediators, making it effective at alleviating sting-related pain.
-
Antihistamine effect: Bee and wasp venoms cause significant histamine release, which drives local inflammation and swelling. While CBD’s direct antihistamine action has not been widely studied, some research indicates that CBD can reduce the immune system's excessive responses that lead to histamine release.
A 2019 study demonstrated that CBD has a regulatory effect on the immune system, potentially lessening the severity of allergic reactions. This suggests that CBD oil might reduce allergy symptoms caused by histamine release following stings.
-
Immune modulation and allergic reactions: People allergic to bee or wasp venom may experience anaphylaxis, a serious condition. CBD is known for its immunomodulatory properties, which may help reduce such excessive immune reactions.
- Research: A 2011 study indicated that CBD can inhibit mast cell activation, a key player in allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. Although this research wasn’t specific to bee or wasp stings, it suggests CBD could potentially lower the risk of anaphylactic responses.
Summary
While the effects described above are promising, it’s important to note that direct clinical research on the relationship between cannabis oil and bee or wasp stings is limited. Existing studies suggest that CBD positively influences inflammation, pain, and immune response, but further specific research is needed to confirm how CBD directly affects bee and wasp venom and related allergic reactions. Although there is currently no direct evidence that CBD specifically interacts with venom toxins, the scientific data warrants further investigation, especially regarding allergy and immune response management.
Caution
In individuals sensitive to wasp or bee venom, stings from these insects can carry serious, life-threatening consequences! We do not encourage anyone to consider cannabis oil as the primary treatment in such cases! If unusual symptoms appear after a wasp or bee sting—such as excessive swelling of the sting site or other body parts, a scratchy throat, or difficulty breathing—seek immediate medical help!
