CBD Oil with coffee?

Consuming CBD Oil with Coffee?
Coffee and cannabis are the two most widely used psychoactive substances worldwide. Some might be surprised by this, but yes, caffeine in coffee is indeed considered a psychoactive substance. It’s a stimulant that speeds up our breathing, heartbeat, thoughts, and actions. While cannabis is often used to relax the body, treat certain illnesses, and boost creativity, coffee – like tea and other caffeine-containing drinks – is generally consumed to energize and help with focus.
Recently, many CBD-enriched coffees have appeared on the market, and more and more people are using full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD Oils by adding drops to their coffee. For this reason, we thought it was worth exploring the topic further. Is mixing caffeine with CBD really beneficial, or is it just another clever marketing trick?
Opposing Effects
The main feature of full-spectrum CBD Oils is that alongside CBD and other cannabinoids, they also contain THC. Therefore, it’s important to discuss the relationship between THC and caffeine as well.
Caffeine generally increases focus and can improve short-term memory, boosts fat metabolism, and prevents drowsiness. These effects often oppose those of THC, which can also help with focus but tends to temporarily impair short-term memory and reduce fat metabolism.
If we combine coffee and THC, which effect prevails?
Plant cannabinoids like THC and CBD mildly inhibit the breakdown of caffeine in the body. However, it’s expected that caffeine will overpower the cannabinoids. A 2011 study from the University of Lisbon supports this, showing that THC’s effectiveness can drop to about one-third when combined with caffeine.
So, keep in mind that if you add THC-containing drops to your coffee, the therapeutic effects attributed to THC will be significantly weakened.
So, does that mean I can’t drink coffee if I’m using full-spectrum cannabis oil?
You can drink coffee, but make sure to space out your coffee and CBD Oil consumption—don’t take them at the same time!
It’s best to take the CBD Oil first, then wait 2-3 hours before having your first coffee or other caffeine-containing drink. This way, you give the THC and other cannabinoids in the oil enough time to be absorbed.
But what about CBD?
CBD increases adenine levels in the brain, which largely contributes to its calming and sedative effects. This is also why fatigue has been one of the most common side effects in clinical trials of Epidiolex, a CBD-based pharmaceutical.
Many don’t realize that caffeine blocks adenosine receptors. Adenosine is an organic compound produced in cells as part of energy metabolism.
It influences rest, the sleep-wake cycle, and helps regulate energy transfer in muscle cells. Adenosine builds up throughout the day and plays a major role in the feeling of fatigue at night.
When mixed with caffeine, CBD’s effects on adenosine are overshadowed by caffeine’s inhibitory effect on adenosine receptors,so if you’re using CBD to improve sleep, consuming it together with coffee won’t produce the desired effect!
If your primary goal with CBD use is to promote good sleep, be sure to take your first dose of CBD Oil on an empty stomach and wait at least 90 minutes before your first coffee. This allows most of the morning-produced adenosine and CBD to be absorbed. You’ll have more energy in the afternoon and sleep better at night! Avoid coffee after 2 PM! A shot of espresso (30-50 ml) contains roughly 60-100 mg of caffeine, which takes about 10 hours to clear from your body!
In Summary
Based on current knowledge, there’s no clear advantage to combining or consuming CBD and caffeine together—unless you just like how the flavors of CBD Oil and coffee complement each other :)
Caffeine weakens the general effects of THC and the positive effects of CBD on sleep, so simultaneous consumption of caffeine with full-spectrum cannabis oil or CBD is not recommended!
It’s important to mention that CBD Oil is not a miracle cure! The cornerstone of maintaining good health includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and a stress-free lifestyle. CBD does not replace any of these! In Hungary and most EU countries, CBD is classified as a "novel food" because its widespread use before 1997 is not documented. Therefore, no health prevention or treatment claims can be made about CBD products.
