HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is a compound that belongs to the cannabinoid family of compounds. Cannabinoids naturally occur in the hemp/cannabis plant. Over 100 different cannabinoids have been identified so far, among which perhaps the best known are CBD and THC.
Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a compound whose structure is similar to that of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the most well-known and widely studied cannabinoid in hemp and is responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects. HHC is a so-called semi-synthetic cannabinoid, produced by hydrogenating THC.
What effects does HHC have?
Much like THC, HHC is a psychoactive compound, meaning it alters consciousness, but it is not as potent as THC. At least, this is what the chemical structures suggest. However, with concentrated oils containing 10–15–20% HHC, just 4-5 drops may be enough for someone to feel “high.” HHC is an under-researched area within the cannabinoid family. Many manufacturers and sellers claim various health benefits, but it’s important to note that there is no broad scientific evidence available regarding hexahydrocannabinol (HHC). Based on its structural similarity to THC, it is possible that HHC has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Research on cannabinoids and cannabis is rapidly evolving, and the scientific community is continuously exploring these compounds' health effects, potential uses, and clinical applications. Currently, the main focus remains on CBD, THC, and CBG.
Is HHC oil legal? Will it show up on a drug test?
According to Hungarian drug law, HHC is considered a THC analog, meaning its chemical structure is very similar to THC’s, and therefore it is a prohibited substance.
So how is it possible that it is freely available for purchase in Hungary?
Different EU member states have varying drug laws, and not all explicitly prohibit analog compounds, so it can happen that HHC is not regulated in some countries. Most HHC-selling online shops are operated by foreign-registered companies from where anyone can order, but this does not make the product “legal.”
Manufacturers and sellers often claim that their HHC products are "THC-free" and that using them won’t be detected in drug tests, therefore consumers need not worry about any consequences. However, this is incorrect on both counts. Based on data from the Austria-based IFHA cannabis testing lab, most HHC products tested in the past proved not to be "THC-free," and drug tests surprisingly came back positive. Understanding this requires grasping that drug testing employs different methods and serves different purposes, making it essential to know the variations of drug tests to interpret cannabinoid test results properly.
Every European country has legally regulated procedures for analyzing and evaluating THC and its metabolite concentrations. For other psychoactive cannabinoids, labs are expected to detect them as “new psychoactive substances” and include them in expert assessments, which is why using HHC oil before or during driving or working is strongly discouraged. The same applies to low-THC, full-spectrum CBD oils, although these do not cause the strong intoxication linked to HHC products, even in small amounts.
It’s important to mention that CBD Oil is not a miracle cure! The cornerstones of maintaining our health are regular exercise, a balanced diet, and a stress-free lifestyle. CBD does not replace any of these! In Hungary and most EU countries, CBD is classified as a “novel food” since its widespread use before 1997 was not proven; therefore, no claims can be made regarding the prevention or treatment of diseases with CBD-containing products.
