Isolate in CBD Oil – Natural?
CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular, and along with it, a growing number of misconceptions and misunderstandings are circulating about it. One of the most common is:
“CBD isolate is an artificial, lab-produced, synthetic substance.”
This is not true. Let’s take a closer look at what an isolate really is.
Isolate comes from the plant — it’s not synthetic!
To understand this well, a good starting point is the meaning of the word itself.
Isolate, or isolation, means separating one substance from other substances.
We don’t artificially create something; instead, we separate an existing component from the rest.
✔ The starting material is the cannabis plant
✔ The active ingredient we isolate is originally present in the plant
✔ The process simply “extracts” it → no new molecules are created
Therefore, isolate is not synthetic, artificial, or man-made.

Steps in Producing Cannabis Isolate

They extract the “mass” rich in active ingredients from the plant.
– The best manufacturers use CO2 extraction because it is clean and provides a broad spectrum of active ingredients. -
The extract is purified.
– Waxes, fats, and plant fibers are removed. -
The active ingredients are separated by their boiling points.
– The purified cannabis extract is heated under vacuum, allowing separation of cannabinoids such as CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN, CBC. -
Once enough crystals have formed, the solution is passed through a filter. The solid crystals remain on the filter while excess solvent (and trace amounts of other substances) pass through.

Cannabinoids are collected in crystal form.
– Warm distillate is dissolved in heptane, a very safe hydrocarbon used in pharmaceutical and food industries. One major advantage is that it is extremely volatile and completely evaporates from the product.

The solution is then slowly cooled.

As the temperature drops, the solubility of the CBD (or other target cannabinoid) decreases, and it begins to crystallize.

Initially, tiny crystal cores form, and from these, larger crystals grow.
This process is often optimized by:

to yield nice, easily filterable crystals.

The result: wet isolate crystals that still contain some solvent. After further drying, all solvent evaporates, leaving behind pure white powder with no artificially created substance.

Why do many people still think it’s “synthetic”?
There are two main reasons:
1. Isolate is a white powder or crystal → looks “lab-made” to many
Because the final product is a pure, snow-white powder, it can easily look “plastic” to the untrained eye.
But this is the same CBD found in the hemp flower — just at 99% purity.
2. It’s confused with truly synthetic cannabinoids
There used to be illegal “synthetic cannabinoids” (e.g., Spice) which were chemically completely different molecules, unrelated to natural CBD or THC.
However, isolate is not among those.
CBD isolate = natural CBD, just purified.
It has nothing to do with synthetic substances.
What is the role of isolate in CBD oil?
To understand this, we literally need to go back to the roots, to the plant itself. You cannot extract more active ingredients from cannabis than it naturally contains. This fact determines how much CBD and other cannabinoids will be in the raw extract.
This varies by cannabis strain, but it is also important to consider that the raw, purified extract has a high THC content, which can be reduced to 0.2% by dilution, i.e., adding a carrier oil.
Think of the raw extract like a syrup that you need to dilute with water to make it drinkable.
However, dilution also proportionally reduces every other cannabinoid, including the CBD level.
For high-CBD cannabis strains, even after dilution, there’s still plenty of active ingredient, but at best it only reaches about a 5% concentration — roughly 1500 mg of CBD in 30 ml of product.
If you want a higher concentration, there’s no other choice but to add isolate, but now you know there’s nothing wrong or “artificial” about it.
Isolate is as natural as the plant it comes from.
When is it a problem?
It’s a problem if you expect miracles from a CBD oil that only contains CBD. Products like that have just a fraction of the therapeutic effect of high-quality broad-spectrum or full-spectrum CBD oils, which contain many components.

The manufacturer dissolves CBD isolate in some plant-derived oil and adds no other isolate (unless concentrated plant extract is used).
It’s not only CBD that can be isolated but almost every cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBD is the most abundant active ingredient in the plant, so it’s the cheapest to produce. Isolated CBG, CBN, or CBDA cost three to four times more than CBD—and now you also know why such products exist on the market.
Cheap to produce, expensive to sell.
