Pesticides in CBD Oil – Why Independent Laboratory Testing Matters

One of the world’s largest cannabis testing institutions, the Spanish FundacionCanna, recently tested over 190 different pesticides and other agricultural chemicals in CANNADOL^TMCBD Oils. The result: negative for every chemical ingredient tested. - certificates from the institute are available for download at the end of this article - For us, the result came as no surprise because we control the cultivation of our raw materials and know that the cannabis used to produce our CBD Oils grows in a pure, chemical-free environment. Still, it was reassuring to see the credible certification from one of the most respected testing institutions, validating our efforts.

But why is it so important to test CBD Oils for pesticides?

The answer lies in the practices of industrial-scale farming, specifically the so-called chemical desiccation, which unfortunately is sometimes used in hemp cultivation as well.
Chemical desiccation is a process where chemicals are used to speed up and improve the drying of plants, making harvesting easier. For seed crops like sunflower or hemp, chemical desiccation also reduces seed loss during harvest by contracting the husk around the seed, preventing “shattering,” so more seeds end up in storage and ultimately yield more oil.

Hemp seed oil, pressed from hemp seeds, is an important component in the production of CBD Oil, as the CBD-rich extract from the hemp flowers must be diluted to achieve a dropper-friendly consistency. The hemp's own oil is often used for this, which is one of the most expensive vegetable oils, so farmers try to harvest with minimal loss.

Chemical desiccation carries environmental and health risks. Desiccants must be applied correctly during production to minimize these risks and comply with regulations, but even with strict adherence and great care, it’s impossible to completely eliminate trace amounts of these chemicals from the final product.

For us, complete chemical-free cultivation is more important, and we want to offer our customers a product we use ourselves with peace of mind. That’s why we accept a higher seed loss and more challenging harvesting conditions, and we don’t use any chemicals at all—not even herbicides!
