CBD Oil may be effective in treating Crohn's disease

CBD Oil for Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that primarily affects the digestive tract. The disease comes with various symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, weight loss, and fatigue. The exact causes of Crohn's disease are not fully understood, but research suggests that genetic factors, environmental factors, immune system abnormalities, and an imbalance in the gut microbiome may all play a role in its development.

The global incidence of Crohn's disease has increased in recent decades, partly due to the shift toward Western lifestyles in developing countries.
More than 2 million people in North America and around 3.2 million people in Europe live with this condition.

Treatment generally aims to relieve acute symptoms and achieve long-term remission. It may include anti-inflammatory drugs, immunomodulators, biologic therapies, as well as lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments. Current treatment options, however, are not always effective and can have side effects.

Can CBD Oil Help?

In recent years, interest in cannabidiol (CBD) oil as a treatment for Crohn's disease has grown. CBD is one of many compounds with therapeutic properties found in the cannabis plant, collectively known as phytocannabinoids. Researchers believe that CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, potentially making it useful for managing the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

Some studies have shown that CBD can reduce abdominal pain and ease diarrhea, thereby improving patients’ quality of life.
Using CBD for Crohn’s disease may offer an alternative for those who do not respond well to conventional treatments or who experience side effects.

In a 2021 randomized, controlled trial, Crohn’s patients were given CBD-rich, full-spectrum cannabis extract — meaning it also contained THC — for 8 weeks. Compared to the placebo group, significant clinical improvement and quality of life enhancement were observed. PubMed+1

However, no changes were observed in inflammatory markers (e.g., CRP, calprotectin), and endoscopic examinations did not show significant improvement.

The authors concluded that while patients' symptoms improved and quality of life increased, objective signs of healing (remission) — such as changes in inflammatory markers or mucosal healing in the intestines — could not be confirmed.

This finding has been supported by several subsequent studies. The results — symptom relief and improved quality of life — are promising, but questions about objective inflammation reduction, long-term effects, side effects, proper dosage, and optimal formulations remain open regarding the use of CBD Oil.

Which CBD Oil Is Better for Crohn’s Disease? BROAD-SPECTRUM OR FULL-SPECTRUM?

If you’re new to CBD Oil, it’s important to understand the two main types. There are broad-spectrum and full-spectrum oils. Ideally, both contain beneficial ingredients in addition to CBD (various cannabinoids), but full-spectrum CBD Oil also contains a small amount of THC.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the main psychoactive compounds found in cannabis.

In the body, THC binds to CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, which are located in the brain, nervous system, and immune system. Through these receptors, THC influences various functions, including pain perception, appetite, nausea, mood, and inflammation regulation.

Full-spectrum CBD oils contain less than 0.2% THC—too little to cause the psychoactive effects typically associated with THC, yet still enough to exert significant therapeutic benefits.

Full-spectrum products were used in studies that showed clear improvements in quality of life among Crohn's patients, so it’s definitely worth choosing products that contain minimal THC along with other cannabinoids in addition to CBD.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Use for Crohn’s Disease Treatment?

The dosage of CBD Oil varies greatly depending on individual factors. The proper dose should be built up gradually, increasing the daily amount until symptoms ease.
